Phi

I am Phi, 22 years old. As a baby, I was found in a basket floating in the river at a market. An old woman picked me up who I call adopted grandma later, because she sympathized with my situation so much. My grandma and one of her sons loved me very much, but her other son was not happy with me being here and would often beat me. After time, my grandma was old and afraid that she could not always protect me so she brought me to the social welfare center. At first, I was very scared, but soon my life turned to a new chapter at the orphanage. I had a new family with many brothers and sisters, and we were cared for by many uncles and aunts who loved us as fathers and mothers.

I still don’t know my family background and where I am from. Sometimes I asked myself why my life is so unfortunate to me. But, I also encourage myself that there are many other children even more unfortunate than me. I still have the love of my adopted grandmother, and if she hadn’t brought me to the center I don’t know where my life would be now. The day I got the result of passing the college entrance test was a happy day for all the fathers and mothers at the orphanage. The center had a party to celebrate my achievement, and I couldn’t hold back my tears. Life at the university has had many difficulties financially and physically, but the professors and teachers have helped me much in this chapter of my life.

I am a fourth year student now, and my major is Social Work. I chose Social Work to study because this can draw me close to the social welfare center where I grew up. I want to be a social worker because I can understand the disadvantages of life and sympathize with others like me. I am so thankful to the sponsors at New Day for supporting me financially so that I can finish my college and see my dream come to pass. In return I will try my best to study hard, to be a good person and to become an example for the other kids in the orphanage.
