Shengnan, born in 2018, is now a second grader. Her father works tirelessly on 40 mu (about 16 acres) of farmland, leaving home at dawn and returning late at night. Her mother, who struggles with a second-degree mental disability, often finds it difficult to care for the family and their children. The three of them manage to get by on a meager $140 monthly.
This was our third meeting with Shengnan, from the initial screening to her admission process, and she continues to shine with intelligence and wit. Although she seemed a bit anxious at first, her responses were articulate and thoughtful. When her father playfully teased her about not completing her homework and hinted at the teacher’s impending check, Shengnan quickly caught on: “So it’s not our math teacher!” Meanwhile, outside, her mother remained in the sweltering sun, unwilling to step inside.
Beyond the yard, the mountains loomed quietly. We hold onto the hope that one day, Shengnan will scale those heights and discover a broader world waiting for her.
