Xiao Xiang | The Girl Aspiring to Reenter the Classroom
Born in 2011, Xiao Xiang attended a prestigious middle school in Hohhot, where she excelled academically. However, after her parents divorced, she moved in with her mother. In 2024, her mother suffered a stroke, rendering her unable to work and leaving them to rely solely on each other for support. Their only income now comes from a meager monthly subsidy of just over $150 from her mother’s former employer. With rent exceeding $75 their finances have become increasingly strained, especially with medical expenses piling up.
Due to the circumstances, Xiao Xiang had no choice but to drop out of school to care for her mother.
On the day we visited, Xiao Xiang was living in a rented apartment with her mother. Her textbooks still held notes from six months prior, a testament to her interrupted education. Concerned about the distance to the school, her mother had decided against allowing her to return.
We engaged in multiple discussions, emphasizing the crucial role of education in shaping her future and assisting her in finding a more affordable apartment closer to her school.
We firmly believe that returning to the classroom is the vital first step toward rebuilding her future.
