Coming to serve at New Day Foster Home is a life-changing experience. Whatever your background and experience, you can be a blessing to our work and to our children. We welcome both teams and individual volunteers for either short-term or long-term stays. Many of the volunteers in the Foster Home serve either by helping our education department in the pre-school or by helping the nannies who care for the children. Some volunteers come with specialized expertise, and are able to help in other capacities, such as therapy, medical care, public relations or special education for our older children.

General Needs

During the summer, we have a standardized internship program because of the high number of people interested in volunteering during that time. We typically accept summer internship applications up through mid-January for the upcoming summer. However, during the rest of the year, we have a more flexible arrangement. Still, space for volunteers can fill up quickly, so it’s a good idea to apply early if possible.

Our Volunteer Services department helps you coordinate all aspects of your visit, and can even provide you with other service opportunities in the area and at New Day. From choosing dates and obtaining visas, to arranging housing, transportation, and even sightseeing, our bi-lingual staff works hard to make your time in China meaningful and well-spent.

Special Needs

• Special Education Assistant: Because many of our children have special learning challenges, we are currently looking for a very special volunteer to come work with some of these children in small group and one-on-one settings. We are looking for someone with a degree in special education, with special focus and/or work experience preferred in the area of teaching children with mental delays, Down syndrome, and emotional disturbance. The preferred term of service is six months or more, and the need is immediate. This volunteer can also serve by planning and bringing to China any teaching resources such as books, videos, or software, that he/she thinks might be helpful. • Sign Language: A former volunteer who is a sign language interpreter made a helpful guide showing the signs that we teach the children here at New Day Foster Home. All of the children are being taught these signs, even if they are not hearing impaired or language delayed, as we recognize that they can help with communication, especially in the early days of an international adoption. Sign-language is a way that you can communicate with the children during your time volunteering at New Day even if you are not able to speak Mandarin yet, so we encourage you to familiarize yourself with as many of these signs as you can before your trip.
